Associate of Science, Early Childhood Education


An Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education can lead to a variety of jobs in the early childhood workforce. You can also transfer to Eastern Connecticut State University to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree that will enable you to teach Pre-K – 3rd grade in a public or private school setting.

If you’re thinking of a career in early childhood education this is an exciting time in the field.  According to the advocacy group Pre-K Now, 30 of the 38 states that support pre-kindergarten programs increased their enrollment in 2007, and state spending per child for pre-kindergarten programs increased for the first time in over five years.

Early childhood educators are responsible for planning curriculum and daily routines, utilizing community resources to enrich programs and support the needs of children and their families. Working in the early education field provides one of the most satisfying careers imaginable.  Public awareness related to childcare issues has increased dramatically. Families and professionals want to be sure that children are safe and nurtured outside the home by in high quality programs. Trained teachers are needed for state funded and private pre-schools, Head Start programs, para-professionals in public or private schools, and corporate programs.

Careers Outlook

The career outlook in early childhood education is continually growing as more parents enter the workforce and require skilled professionals to care for their young children.  The job outlook for preschool teachers is expected to grow 17 percent through 2022.

The median national annual salary:

  • preschool teachers is $27,130
  • preschool and childcare center directors is $43,950.
  • teachers working in elementary schools is $ 53,090

Actual salaries may vary greatly based on specialization within the field, location, years of experience and a variety of other factors.
