Supportive Counseling

QVCC Supportive Counseling offers short-term, solution-focused personal counseling that promotes academic achievement and personal well-being. Personal counseling will focus on psycho-education, crisis intervention, skills building, basic needs case management, and community referrals. Personal counseling is free to registered students.

Supportive Counseling Services is here to provide you with caring and non-judgmental support in the following areas:

Barriers to Academic Success: Educational scarring; procrastination and motivation; goal setting and completion; classroom anxiety; adjusting as a first time, or first-generation college student

Psychological Issues: depression; anxiety; mood swings; distressing thoughts or mental experiences; substance misuse/abuse; PTSD

Personal Concerns: identity issues, sexuality, self-esteem, assertion, family problems, stress management, self-care

Interpersonal Issues: communication skills, dating and relationship issues, conflict    management

Crisis Intervention: domestic violence, sexual assault, acute stress, death of family member or friend; suicidality

Basic Needs: Food insecurity, homelessness

At your first visit, you will fill out an intake form which will then be reviewed by the counselor. Next, you and your counselor will collaborate to clearly identify what obstacles are impacting you most. By the end of your first meeting, your counselor will recommend a course of action which can include short-term, personal counseling or community resources.  Please note, if at any point in counseling it is determined that other services are more suitable, we will help you obtain assistance from appropriate off-campus providers.

Counselors understand the importance of privacy and strive to keep your participation in services confidential. Supportive Counseling providers do not release information about a student without that student’s written permission, except in the case of imminent danger to self, the college or others; court order; child abuse; or where otherwise required by law.

You can directly request an appointment by visiting the Student Affairs Office or calling Supportive Counseling at (860) 932-4299. It is suggested that you fill out this intake form and have it ready for your first meeting with the counselor.

·         Mondays 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

·         Tuesdays: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

·         Wednesdays: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

·         Thursday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

·         Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Please note that the last counseling appointment of the day will be scheduled one hour prior to the close of the business day.

It is preferred that you please make an appointment. If a counselor is available at the time you are in need, the counselor will see you. If the counselor is not available, there are options for you. You may schedule an appointment with the counselor and will be seen as soon as possible. If you are experiencing a medical and/or mental health emergency, please call 911. Signs of a mental health emergency include: feeling suicidal and/or wanting to harm self or others; severe disorientation or feeling out of touch with reality; severe inability to function; or feeling out of control and severely distraught.

No information about your contact with Supportive Counseling is kept in your permanent academic or financial record.
